A Lead Steward is a supervisory role in the hospitality industry (e.g., hotels, resorts, and convention centers). They lead stewarding teams to maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of kitchens, dishwashing areas, and food storage rooms. Responsibilities include shift supervision, staff training, equipment maintenance, and ensuring strict health and safety compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Supervision: Assign daily tasks, coordinate shift schedules, and manage breaks to ensure stewarding support is continuous during service hours.
- Training & Development: Train new stewards on proper dish washing techniques, chemical usage, and safety protocols.
- Sanitation & Hygiene: Enforce strict adherence to health codes, ensuring all food prep surfaces, utensils, china, and glassware are thoroughly sanitized.
- Equipment Maintenance: Monitor the operation of industrial dish machines, trash compactors, and 3-compartment sinks, reporting and escalating maintenance issues to engineering or kitchen leadership.
- Inventory & Supplies: Manage inventory levels for cleaning supplies, chemicals, and kitchen wares, submitting restocking orders when necessary.
Core Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Typically 1–3 years of stewarding or utility experience, including supervisory or lead experience in high-volume kitchens or luxury resorts.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy items, push carts, and stand/walk for extended periods.
- Certifications: Current Food Handler or Serve Safe certification is often required.
- Communication: Strong communication skills to coordinate with Executive Chefs, culinary workers, and front-of-house banquet staff.
