The Sexton may occasionally be required to work outside these hours for special services or events such as weddings, funerals, and other church functions.

General Responsibilities

The Sexton is responsible for ensuring that the church premises are maintained in good working order so that all services, events, and functions can proceed smoothly. This includes keeping the sanctuary, auxiliary rooms, facilities, and surrounding grounds clean, orderly, and properly prepared.

The Sexton supervises the Cleaner, ensuring that cleaning supplies are adequately stocked and that all areas of the church are kept clean and tidy. The Sexton also ensures that outdoor areas—including sidewalks, stairs, parking lots, and gardens—are maintained, with assistance from the Parking Lot Attendant as needed.

Specific Duties

  • Open and close the church for all scheduled services and events.
  • Prepare the sanctuary for Sunday worship, including:
    • Setting out bulletins
    • Updating hymn boards
    • Arranging flowers
    • Ensuring altar cloths and pulpit fall are the appropriate liturgical colours
    • Polishing brass items
    • Ensuring pews and bookracks are neat and tidy
    • Turning on the sound system
  • Set up rooms for scheduled activities such as Bible Study, Choir rehearsals, meetings, and other gatherings.
  • Empty trash bins and perform cleaning tasks as needed.
  • Coordinate with designated persons for laundering of cloths.
  • Inspect and maintain air‑conditioning wall units, including cleaning filters and fans.
  • Order and maintain inventory of kitchen and cleaning supplies.
  • Assist and supervise contractors or service personnel performing repairs or maintenance.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed and notify the Trust Chairperson when sanctuary lighting requires attention.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the premises, addressing minor repairs when possible and reporting major maintenance concerns to the Trust Chairperson.

Funerals

Facilitating funerals is a standard part of the Sexton’s duties and is normally performed without additional remuneration.

Weddings

  • Church members and regular attendees are not charged a facility fee; however, they are encouraged to provide an honorarium to the Sexton.
  • For weddings involving non-members who rent the church, a portion of the rental fee will be paid to the Sexton.

Additional Duties

The Sexton may be assigned other responsibilities from time to time by the Minister, the Chairperson of the Trust, the SCRC, the Congregational Board, or department leaders (e.g., Sunday School, Choir).
